How can Web 2.0 affect reading comprehension in the regular education classroom? This study compares the reaction, reception and comprehension of text delivered in video format via YouTube.com as compared to traditional classroom text delivery methods. Through the lens of Dr. Louise Rosenblatt’s Transactional Theory, students were asked to interpret the story, The Missing Piece Meets the Big O, by Shel Silverstine, without teacher influence. They were provided with a series of questions to answer after each literary experience with the text. 64 sixth grade students who attend a charter school in downtown Raleigh, NC participated in this study. The study was conducted over a four day period in 45-minute time blocks with 4 different groups of 16 students and two different teachers. Data was collected in the form of written and verbal feedback from the students. The students’ written responses indicated that they comprehended and related to the text better when it was delivered via YouTube video as opposed to traditional reading and oral storytelling. With additional research, the order in which the different text delivery methods were presented could be altered to verify findings.
